Global Airport Developments: Passenger Bridges, Baggage Systems, and Modernisation

Centralny Port Komunikacyjny has launched a major procurement process for passenger boarding bridges at the new Polish central airport, advancing preparations for the core terminal infrastructure. The state-owned company will use a two-stage competitive dialogue to appoint a contractor for the design, supply, installation, commissioning and long-term maintenance of up to 92 passenger boarding bridges, with 72 included in the base scope and 20 as options, making it one of the largest airport tenders of its kind in Europe. The award decision is planned for December 2026, with the selected supplier responsible for detailed design, production and installation ahead of the airport’s opening.

The tender forms part of the wider Port Poland programme led by Centralny Port Komunikacyjny, which is developing a new integrated air, rail and road hub to replace capacity constraints at Warsaw Chopin Airport. Construction of the passenger terminal is scheduled to start in 2026, with the airport planned to become operational by the end of 2032 alongside the first section of the Warsaw–Łódź high-speed rail line. Aeroporti di Roma, the operator of Rome Fiumicino Airport (Lazio, Italy), has launched an open European tender for passenger baggage handling and related terminal logistics services. The framework contract covers baggage movement in terminals, boarding areas and baggage reclaim zones, as well as the handling and relocation of fittings and furniture, with services due to commence on 1 July 2026 for a period of 24 months. The estimated contract value is EUR 4.92 million, equivalent to approximately USD 5.4 million, excluding VAT.

The tender applies to Rome Fiumicino Airport and is being run as a fully electronic open procedure, with bids required by 5 February 2026. Award criteria are based on quality as defined in the tender documentation, and no contract renewal options are included.

The most recent locations added are Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (Michigan, United States), Salt Lake City International Airport (Utah, United States) and Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (Minnesota, United States). With these additions, the service is now available at eight airports: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (Georgia, United States), Boston Logan International Airport (Massachusetts, United States), Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Los Angeles International Airport (California, United States), Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport (New York, United States), Salt Lake City International Airport and Seattle–Tacoma International Airport (Washington, United States).

The Delta One check-in service is available to same-day departing Delta One passengers, Delta 360 members and business class customers travelling on selected partner airlines. Facilities include dedicated staff support, seating areas and light food and beverage offerings.

At Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the Delta One check-in facility has been in operation since July 2025 and is located within the international terminal. Delta One Lounge facilities currently operate at Seattle–Tacoma International Airport, Boston Logan International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport, with no opening date announced for an Atlanta location.

Morocco’s airport operator has launched a digital passenger journey at its main hub to reduce congestion and improve processing efficiency as traffic continues to rise.

National Airports Office (ONDA) has introduced self-service check-in and automated baggage drop systems at Mohammed V International Airport, the country’s primary international gateway and largest airport by passenger traffic. The system allows passengers to print boarding passes, tag luggage and drop bags independently using automated kiosks and Self Bag Drop units, supported by digital and biometric technologies compliant with current safety and security standards.

ONDA said the rollout, which has begun in Casablanca and will be expanded in later phases, is intended to shorten queues, increase terminal throughput and improve the passenger experience as Morocco prepares for higher demand linked to major events, including the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, while aligning airport operations with international best practice. #1259.AIT1

Telecom operators have asked for government intervention over access to mobile network infrastructure at Navi Mumbai International Airport (Maharashtra, India) following a dispute with the airport operator. Telecom service providers, represented by the Cellular Operators’ Association of India, have alleged that Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited has refused to grant right-of-way permission for independent deployment of telecom infrastructure and is requiring operators to use an in-building network controlled by the airport. The association stated that the airport operator has sought charges of about INR 9.2 million per month per operator, amounting to roughly INR 441.6 million annually for four operators, equivalent to about USD 5.3 million.

The telecom body has written to the Department of Telecommunications, arguing that the airport qualifies as a public entity under the Telecommunications Act, 2023 and the Telecommunications (Right of Way) Rules, 2024, and is therefore required to grant access on a non-discriminatory basis. It has been alleged that the arrangement creates exclusive control over network access and restricts competition.

The airport operator has responded that, as the airport is a sensitive operational zone, it has opted to deploy and manage a centralised in-building solution to ensure consistent maintenance, security and uninterrupted connectivity across the facility. The airport opened in December 2025 and is operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited, which operates eight airports across India.

Escalators supplied by TK Elevator India have been installed at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (Guwahati, Assam, India) as part of ongoing terminal modernisation works supporting passenger circulation and accessibility. The airport serves as the primary aviation gateway for Assam and the wider North East India region, where recent upgrades have focused on improving terminal capacity, passenger flow and compliance with contemporary airport infrastructure standards.

Construction and equipment installation at Long Thanh International Airport (Dong Nai Province, Vietnam) continued through the 2026 Lunar New Year holiday to maintain the project schedule. According to the Long Thanh International Airport Project Management Board, work during the holiday period focused on completion of the passenger terminal and installation of key systems. More than 5,300 personnel and over 1,000 machines and items of equipment were deployed at the terminal, where structural construction has largely been completed, and fit-out and systems installation are underway.

Installation of the baggage handling system is nearing completion, with 2,790 tonnes of steel flooring installed, representing about 99% of the total, and approximately 7,500 m of conveyor belts in place. Nearly 200 units of baggage and carry-on screening equipment have been delivered, with installation progressing in the domestic terminal area. Passenger boarding bridges, escalators, lifts and stairways have also been delivered and are being installed, alongside aircraft parking guidance systems at the gates.

Airside works, including runways, taxiways and aircraft parking aprons, are largely complete, while construction of the internal airside road network, fuel supply system and second runway is continuing at an accelerated pace, reported to be around three months ahead of the original contract schedule.

Long Thanh International Airport is being developed with a planned capacity of up to 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargo annually. Around 15,000 workers and 3,000 machines are currently mobilised across the site, with the airport scheduled to enter commercial operation in the first half of 2026.

Manas International Airport (Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan) is continuing the installation of a Category III (CAT III) airfield lighting system as part of ongoing infrastructure modernisation works. The CAT III system will allow aircraft operations in conditions of low visibility and heavy fog, supporting landings and departures when weather conditions are restricted. The installation is being carried out in line with international civil aviation standards and forms part of broader airside upgrades at the airport.

The airport operator has confirmed that operational use of the system will remain subject to flight crew decisions based on prevailing weather conditions and aircraft certification. The works are intended to improve operational reliability and reduce weather-related disruption once commissioning is completed.
